THE PROCESS

Behind every art piece is a complicated process.

Here is an example process for the making of a marble sculpture – Explained in eleven steps.

STEP ONE.

After the person has been visited, photographed and measured, the process of making a draft in clay begins.

STEP TWO.

The clay figure is corrected to “on location”.

STEP THREE.

A silicone mold is made over the clay figure.

STEP FOUR.

A plaster cast is then made.

STEP FIVE.

The finished plaster figure

STEP SIX.

Using a pointing machine (invented in the 18th century) which can be moved between the model and the marble block, thousands of points are transferred from the model to the stone. The pointing machine can be used for all three dimensions and is attached in 3 fixed points in both plaster model and marble block.

STEP SEVEN.

First, an outline of the figure is drawn using the machine.

STEP EIGHT.

Now the outline has been drawn and material can be removed around the figure to the correct depth.

STEP NINE.

The pointing machine is used to determine how far down or into the figure one must go.

STEP TEN.

Thousands of points have been measured (marked with a pencil), which are transferred precisely to the marble block.

STEP ELEVEN.

The finished result.

…And that’s one of many processes in art.
